I Choose Me

I was picking up material for my hubby around the corner from where I left my corporate job when I decided to stop in and say hello. It had been 4 years since I left. The supervisor said they are hiring and asked me if I wanted my old job back … this job comes with

  • $50+k per year
  • Health Benefits
  • Reduced mortgage and loan rates
  • No banking fees
  • End of year bonus
  • Potential for prizes such as paid cruises and free stuff.

I know, right???

I must admit, being offered my old job back, especially because they felt they NEEDED ME back felt awesome. That they FINALLY recognized the value my talents, knowledge and expertise had brought to the team.

What surprised me more, was how amazing it felt to politely decline. If you are shaking your head right now, saying that is crazy – why would you walk away from that let me explain.

I knew I was bringing far more value to the table than I was being compensated or even appreciated for. I felt taken advantage of. Take that list of job benefits and compare it to this list of personal outcomes.

  • Over-worked
  • Underpaid
  • Overwhelm
  • Micro-managed
  • Anxiety
  • No job security

Since branching out and becoming my own boss the last time I checked … I DECIDE how much I get paid. I DECIDE what my “bonuses” are and WHEN they come. And they don’t just have to be once a year 😉. Sure I had to make some tough choices about what to keep in my life, and what was just taking up time, money and space. Throughout the transition I got to learn so much more about me. My strengths, my talents. No longer having to hope that a manager MIGHT NOTICE everything I have to offer, I am able to freely offer you and the universe all my energy uninhibited by quarterly reviews. Are you ready to do the same?

To my former colleagues who so generously offered me my old position I say –

Thank you for finally recognizing that I did an amazing job.

Thank you for offering me an opportunity.

Thank you for the reminder of how far I’ve come
